Rodriguez Elected Advisory Council Chair

Leo Rodriguez, a senior, majoring in marketing in the Robinson College of Business was elected as Chair of the Student Center Advisory Council at their first meeting of the year on September 28, 2017. Rodriguez also serves as President of International Student Association Council, a group comprised of the presidents and officers of over 15 international student associations. He also serves as President of the Latin American Student Association. The Student Center Advisory Council Chairperson’s responsibilities include: preparing meeting agendas, presiding at meetings, distributing recommendation and meeting minutes, represents the Council to Student Center constituents and assists the Director in the orientation/training of new Council members.

The mission of the Georgia State University Student Center is to foster meaningful growth opportunities that nurture an inclusive and diverse community through innovative services, programs and facilities.

The Student Center Advisory Council was established in the Fall of 2014 to assist in the accomplishment of the Student Center’s mission by serving as the voice of the patrons, acting as an advocate of the Student Center and articulating standards for the level of services to be provided and advising the Senior Director regarding the quality and excellence of Student Center programs, facilities, operations and services. The Council makes policy recommendations and is a formal mechanism for input and the informal arena for the discussion of ideas affecting the Student Center.

While the group only meets twice a semester, they provide valuable feedback to the Student Center administration. They have made recommendations regarding the Student Centers operating hours (reducing hours on Sundays from Noon – 9 to 2 pm – 9 due to the lack of student use of the facility between Noon and 2), suggested changes to the Senior Director of PantherDining and Sustainability regarding retail food and catering operations in the Student Center, and assisted the Student Center Event Management office in updating their policies to be more equitable.

While there are 4 positions on the Council reserved for students who serve in key positions in the Student Center, i.e. Building Manager, Information Center Manager, Executive Director of Spotlight and the SGA’s Student Services Chair or their designees, there are 7 positions filled from nominations from the following organizations/departments as well as self-nominations.

  • Multicultural Center
  • New Student Orientation
  • Religious Life
  • Residence Hall Association
  • Student Veterans Association
  • Disability Services
  • Student Media
  • At least 2 student members shall be Graduate Students

Each group may submit up to three nominees to be considered for appointment to the Council. All nominees must complete an application for consideration. Nominations to fill the faculty, staff and alumni representative positions will be sought from their respective councils.
